Med-O-Scan: Mapping Medical Tourism Readiness

The Medical Tourism Readiness Mapping Tool has two main objectives:
1. It evaluates the readiness of individual hospitals/clinics in the international healthcare space by looking at key elements of preparedness, e.g. capacity, specialities, doctors, support services, accreditation.
2. It identifies strengths and weakness of individual hospitals/clinics to better understand where they should be focusing their resources and efforts should they wish to enter/develop medical travel.

The tool has 13 modules and 47 questions. The aim is to gather information about the hospital/clinic, the current business, medical staff, patient volumes, support services, marketing and expectations. The modules are as follows:

  1. Classification of Hospital/Clinic
  2. Accreditation & Certification
  3. Inpatient and Outpatient Admissions (National and International)
  4. Business Performance & Information
  5. Motivation of Patients
  6. Clinical Programs (Most Important, Most Profitable, etc.)
  7. Medical Staff (Training, Certification)
  8. International Patient & Medical Tourist Information
  9. Support Services
  10. Marketing/Communication Practices
  11. Concerns and Challenges
  12. Rationale of International Medical Tourism Plans
  13. Expectations

This mapping tool has all the questions that any hospital interested in international medical tourism should consider. Answering those questions helps the organization to fine-tune and develop its services to make the hospital (more) competitive and successful.

The initial output visualises the findings on a Not Prepared – Well Prepared scale according to eight dimensions pf preparedness:

    1. Infrastructure & Technology Preparedness
    2. HR Preparedness
    3. Marketing/ Brand Preparedness
    4. Cost of Further Developments
    5. Risks of Development
    6. Contribution to Patient Volume
    7. Contribution to Value Generation
    8. Competitive Value Proposition

The detailed result of the review is the Medical Tourism Preparedness Heatmap. See more details about the Heatmap here. The Heatmap highlights the key investments and development required to make the hospital/clinic competitive in international medical tourism market.
